Do Gasoline Prices Really Affect Auto Sales?

A look at gasoline prices and auto sales over the past twenty years is rather surprising. While one would think that increasing gasoline prices would have a quick and immediate affect on auto sales, it looks like it takes a number of years for the effects to be seen. Part of this data is explained by people wishing to replace older and less fuel efficient vehicles with high efficient ones. Popular models like Toyota’s (TM) Prius, the Ford (F) Fusion Hybrid and Honda’s (HMC) Honda Civic Hybrid all help consumers decrease their gas bill and increase new vehicle sales.

Even more interesting is the data from past couple years. The recovery after the 2008 recession economic growth can boost auto sales and make rising gasoline prices largely irrelevant.
